Another anthology complete.
This was the first omen movie I saw. Got the collection and this one. “The Omen” collection is good but “The Conjuring-verse”, “Insidious” collection, & “The Exorcist” collection are all better. The fourth movie in the Omen saga had an evil girl, Damien’s daughter who survived but for some reason there’s no sequel with that character.

A yawn-fest disguised as a prequel to a chilling and stylish 3-part masterpiece.
Warning: There are some spoilers ahead. When I first heard that there was going to be a prequel to “The Omen” trilogy, I didn’t care, because there was no doubt in my mind that it would not be good. How could it be? But then I started reading reviews, which were mostly positive. At that point I stopped reading and looked forward to the opportunity to see “The First Omen.”Twenty-minutes ago, after “The First Omen” came to the end, I sat in my seat, practically numb, staring at the seemingly endless credits, with hundreds of names I could not pronounce. It was an impressively long list, but this was more like coming to the end of a two-hour school play, badly written and acted by a bunch of third-graders, taking their bows while looming over-head is a 78″ Walmart Black-Friday Sale flat-screen, listing the name of every kid in the school, while most of the formerly comatose audience claps loudly.Ok, you get it. I didn’t like the film. Let me put it like this: I absolutely hated “The First Omen,” at least 90% of it. To put it mildly, it is an insult to the three original films, especially the first one.It starts off promising: A young woman has been admitted to a Catholic all-girls orphanage. The place seems all warm and nice at first, but then this woman starts to see things and faces that creep her out, or should I say, through her eyes we get ‘weird face’ jump-scares, very much like we have seen countless times during the first batch of Asian horror films, to be repeated in numerous horror films and short youtube vines produced by sixth graders. It is exactly at that point, that I knew “The First Omen” was in trouble. One of the great things about the original “Omen” trilogy is that they were very stylish and fresh, avoiding most of horror-movie cliches. This time around there’s nothing fresh or original to be found here. Making matters worse is a series of long sequences (filler-material) that are pointless, especially a painfully boring segment in which are heroine gets all gussied up and goes to downtown Rome, featuring the 1971 version of a disco-club, blaring a style of music that I’m pretty sure did not exist in 1971. She is led there by a young ‘sister’ whom doesn’t like to play by the rules. She also meets a young man who tickles her fancy, and eventually, more sensitive parts of her body.Next morning she awakens, feeling ashamed for stepping out of line. After a prayer, punctuated by inspiring choral music, she asks for forgiveness, and then the movie starts to get weird, with emphasis on the word, ‘weird,’ adding elements that were obviously inspired by Dario Argento’s “Suspiria” and as the movie comes to it’s big finale, connecting to the original’s story-line, we get large chunks from Roman Polanski’s “Rosemary’s Baby,” punctuated by a key piece from the late Jerry Goldsmith’s fantastic score for the original “The Omen.”The film should have ended there. It did not.As if we are supposed to get chills of happiness seeing a familiar visual, the filmmakers try to re-create an early scene from 1976’s “The Omen,” complete with an image of Gregory Peck.Surely, this has to be the end.But wait, the movie version of water-boarding is still not over.Next comes what is undoubtedly one of the dumbest tacked-on endings I have experienced in a life-time of watching movies. This scene makes absolutely no sense, and seems to suggest there could be another film.”The Second Omen”Please, in the name of all that’s holy, spare us.In conclusion:81% on Rotten Tomatoes? I’m thinking it is a typo and the editors just don’t want to admit it. I’m convinced the page lay-out person mixed up the numbers. That has to be it, because there is no viable explanation for a movie that sucks as bad as this one, receiving that many positive reviews. But hey, in all fairness, I’m one of the very few film critics that actually liked “King Kong Lives.””Jonathan Livingston Seagull” wasn’t that bad either.

One of 2024’s best
What a fantastic addition to the franchise even tho it comes before the other. It was really good and Nell Tiger Free is a stunning actor. She absolutely deserves an award for her performance.

More-than-worthy sequel
Could have been a cheesy cash-in sequel to a 50-year-old film, but is instead disconcerting and electric. I think it’s better than the original film.

Nell Tiger Free is a star.
One of the best movies of 2024. Honestly if it weren’t for Longlegs I think it would be my #1; the performances, especially Nell Free’s truly transformative one, drive this far past genre fare and into the realm of greatness.
