Like any good quest, their journey is filled with magic spells, cryptic maps, impossible obstacles, and unimaginable discoveries. But when the boys’ fearless mom Laurel (voice of Julia Louis-Dreyfus) realizes that her sons are missing, she teams up with a part-lion, part-bat, part-scorpion, former warrior – aka The Manticore (voice of Octavia Spencer) – and heads off to find them. Perilous curses aside, this one magical day could mean more than any of them ever dreamed. Onward Blu-ray

    Unexpected and a delight

With poor advertising I was amiss with this movie. I wasn’t going to watch it since scrounging a few bucks to go too the movie theater wasn’t in the cards and with such short notice too it’s release I figured I’d wait till it hit digital so I could buy it when I had money. Then the Coronavirus hit and shutdown everything. The movie hit prime for “Cinema” purchase… hope I get to keep the movie… and I figured why not, give it a shot. This reminded me so much of my Brother and I that it literally had me laughing, smiling, and crying. Something everyone can relate too… well if your a nerd that liked D&D, which I’m happy to proclaim that I am. Made me wanna jump right back into the table top genre. I was expecting a Father and sons kind of movie and what I got was a mix of all kinds, but the biggest was the bond between brothers and how truly important that bond can be. It hit the spot and it showed more of an ending than most movies that show nothing but happy endings. There was realism in the most primal way, the sacrifices one has to make so another can succeed and finding yourself while you grow creating your own success. It’s also the first movie to get me to want too write a review. Hope this was helpful ^_^ So with my final thoughts are this, don’t expect ‘aw’ or ‘boom in yo face’ entertainment, expect a good story with everyday magic that is part of our everyday life. Worth 5 stars too me.

Best family movie I’ve seen in a long time

The story line was well presented, and it wasn’t even predictable, which is hard to find nowadays. The family relationships and learning who you really are really struck home. My only gripe would be that the ending concerning the father could have easily happened another way, though I understand why the makers of the film didn’t take that route…((((((((( If you haven’t watched it, don’t read this part in the parentheses! Skip to the end of the parentheses. Because the spell was cast again using a second gem, technically the time limit should have been restarted! I was disappointed that it wasn’t, but I’m also glad that we got the heart-to-heart moment that Barley needed. )))))))))And for those complaining about the subtle LGBT scene, that doesn’t necessarily mean the one character was in a relationship like that. Plenty of women call their female friends “girlfriends.” My parents, uncles, etc, have called my best friend my girlfriend a lot, but we’re not in a romantic relationship. And even if that was meant to be a reference to LGBT, then it’s not hurting anyone to include a very stigmatized part of the global population. If you don’t want your children to get any idea, let them know you think that’s not right, in a kind way. Don’t scare them away from asking questions, and don’t teach them hate either. This world has enough negativity.Anyway, you will probably enjoy this movie if you like any of these things:- Dungeons & Dragons and games related to it- familial love and “what would you do to protect them?” stories- action. There’s quite a bit of action.- family movies- high-speed car chases- anything “outside the box”- “coming of age” stories- realization of what you really have- stories that might make you sob. I don’t cry too easily, but I admit I shed a few tears.I’m probably missing some things, but this movie has a lot. 10/10; I would definitely recommend.

Amazing movie, I’m not going to spoil anything.

This is worth the watch. I was feeling really down and depressed one night but this movie is fantastic, whimsical, mysterious, adventurous, and the action gets really good at the end. It is also a tear-jerker! Very relatable. The conflicts between the characters are so real it makes me uncomfortable in the best way. The “duo breaks up over a misunderstanding” trope is there, as are many other tropes, but it’s done SO WELL that its believable. Some of the antics in the middle of the story were a bit ridiculous and felt filler-ish, but I suppose that’s for the kids watching who need humor going on. There was no clear villain in the story, rather there were obstacles and some of them were a bit boring (looking at you, biker pixies) but there were so many moments where characters legitimately were in harms way and I was on the edge of my seat, even during sillier scenes like these. My heart jumped a lot at this movie because there was SO MUCH at stake.I won’t commentate on what the whole story is about, because I think its worth it to find out. I was just nitpicking some details.TL;DR: The best part about this movie is that it gets better as you watch it, instead of the reverse. It has beautiful touches of mythical-ness and if you’re a fan of medieval board games, this movie is a treat.

A somewhat standard coming of age story with Pixar’s usual charm.

I always look forward to Pixar films, mostly to see how visually stunning a movie created entirely in a computer can look with each passing year of technological and programming advancements. The other reason I will always go to see a Pixar movie is their dedication to a good story. Sure, there have been some missed steps over the years (The Good Dinosaur (2015) being the latest example), but their track record has been good enough to warrant me seeing their films in the theater. While I was looking forward to this year’s offering of Onward (2020), the result felt a little lackluster overall.Choosing to explore a storyline with a deceased parent was odd in that it felt like something that had rarely been addressed in movies geared toward children while also having a strong “after school special” vibe to it. Either way, putting it in a pseudo-Monsters, Inc. (2001) fantasy world was a fun way to deliver this tale of two brothers on a road trip to find a way to bring their father back for a single day. I laughed out loud at the freeze-frame jokes that I picked up on (my favorite being the “Mountain Doom” soda can), and I’m sure I’ll have to pause it a bunch of times if I pick it up to own at some point. While the “coming of age” story felt a little weak overall—having been done a ton elsewhere—the emotional impact of the last 10-15 minutes had me ugly crying in the way that Pixar films always do. I liked the climax of this film, but there were times where I thought the focus of the action completely forgot about the father’s legs (which themselves were the source of plenty of superb visual gags). Is this Pixar’s best film? Probably not. Is it better than the other CGI animation out there? Most definitely.A somewhat standard coming of age story with Pixar’s usual charm, I give Onward 3.5 stars out of 5.

Where is the 6th star option?

A beautiful and relevant story about siblings. The ending is nothing short of brilliant. This came out when covid hit and lost all its immediate PR opportunities because everyone’s attention was on the pandemic. The story follows 2 brothers in a magical world where people are too lazy to use magic because they have technology. The older brother is based off your average rpg d&d nerd with a passion for the elder ways of magic. The younger brother is shy and uncomfortable in his own skin and wishing he could be someone like his dad whom he never met, but heard about. Before dying, their father worked on a magical spell to bring himself back for 1 day. The boys discover that the younger brother is the only one gifted with magical abilities, so they try and bring back their dad, but only to his torso. Hence the brothers go on a quest led by magic enthusiast big brother to bring back their dad all the way. The ending is a tearjerker (spoiler alert) only one of them ends up getting to see the full dad and it turns out to be the older brother who actually had a relationship with his father and he was able to get the closure he had always wanted. Little brother gave him this gift because he realized that the older brother had been his dad figure all along. Man. Tear jerker. This one hits.

    Fun And Heartwarming

I don’t watch many movies. In fact, I basically only watch animated movies. So I decided to give Onward a try and I’m glad I did. It made me laugh SO much. And it also made me feel like I was watching a real family, not some cartoon. Pixar is a master at making all its characters seem like real “people” with real emotions. Onward is no different! I didn’t know the Dad was going to just be legs, had I known that, I might have thought “too weird”. But watching it, it totally worked. What really works is how you can just imagine this magical, fantasy world as a real one. All the little details Pixar is famous for are certainly present in this film. The Manticore is one of my very favorite characters, she is hilarious. The scene at The Manticore’s Tavern is a hoot! I love how they blended in modern-day with the magical, Medieval theme. Yes, gamers will love this movie even more, and you do have to at least know what an RPG is to really appreciate a lot of it.As far as the homosexual reference, I have no idea what is wrong with trying to show diversity and acceptance of all walks of life and lifestyles. Honestly, the first time I saw this movie, I didn’t even notice she was a female cop. The second time I did and thought “Well, all right. They’re trying represent all lifestyles.” Sure, it seems a tad forced into the story, but it’s actually a good thing. I’m surprised so many people had issues with it!The end made me misty-eyed, but in a good way. I don’t think this movie excessively sad at all, it’s actually quite a nice ending and the main character develops in a positive way. This is another one of Pixar’s movies that I enjoy watching again and again and again!

    Family Fun

Onward is definitely a MUST SEE to take your kids to! It has some great underlining life lessons and morals to teach children. Trusting in yourself and having courage to cross an invisible bridge, trusting others to guide you, that sometimes when you are on a quest to find something of value that was lost… you’ll often find it in your own backyard as the journey went full circle and brought you right back home where you started. It teaches the value of sibling relationships. It teaches putting someone’s needs before your own wants. And it teaches us that even though we have lost someone to heaven, that they are still with us in so many other ways. I loved the movie! Children were laughing… As well as adults! It was hilarious and delightful! But yes, at the end there were a few older children and adults with tears. I was one of them. The ending is bittersweet, as they finally get to tell their dad goodbye. Take your kids, but be prepared for some tears, emotions and conversation if they have lost a parent to death or divorce. I lost my dad almost 10 years ago, and yet I had tears, wishing I could see him and hug him one last time. THIS IS A WONDERFUL MOVIE!!!
