A diabolical Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant) ensnares two young missionaries in his terrifying game of cat-and-mouse when they knock on the wrong door and are forced to prove their faith. Heretic Steelbook Blu-ray
Young Mormon missionaries Barnes (Sophie Thatcher) and Paxton (Chloe East) thought their day’s rounds would be like any other when they knocked at the door of the seemingly innocuous Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant). While their living room chat grew uncomfortable as their host pushed them regarding their faith and religion, that would pale next to the realization that they were trapped-and that they’d be facing a terrifying test of their convictions. Scott Beck and Ryan Woods’ challenging stunner co-stars Topher Grace. 111 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack: English. Region Free…Heretic Steelbook Blu-ray

Very Creepy and Philosophical
Eerie mix of religious and philosophical thought, and downright creepiness. Makes you think. Very unique, and truly scary story. I’ve never seen Hugh Grant in a role like this before. Wow, was he creepy. Well written, directed, cast, and acted. One of the better horror movies I’ve ever seen, or is it satire? This is definitely one of those oddball movies that stands out, and that you remember.

Good movie
Interesting and thought provoking.

Straight up horror thriller entertainment
Solid not over-baked horror thriller with some novel twists and turns. Hugh Grant delivered as a chilling and twisted antagonist and Sophie Thatcher and Chloe East were wonderful. Not loaded up with physical gore, this flick stands on solid script and acting.

Worse movie I’ve watched in the last 10 years
This movie is a massive waste of your time. It’s not entertaining it’s not scary it’s not even interesting. Then the end it just leaves you confused and unfulfilled.

Take it from an exmo/sis. Missionary
Where to begin? So good. As an exmo/sis. missionary, this hit close to home. I thought they did a great job of not only the acting as what a missionary and investigator scenario would be like, but there were so many deeply thought-provoking scenarios. Honestly, I had to watch it twice to digest everything. It was a lot, but in a good way. Definitely gives perspective of the power of a religion-control/blind belief. Take it from me and just watch it.

Grant & Cast are Good. Story doesn’t hold together
2.5 stars. Interesting, but not satisfying. The beginning shows to two young Mormon women who have been partnered as missionaries. They are getting to know one another as they go through their day of visiting people to talk about their religion. They arrive at the house of a polite man who invites them in for a religious discussion. It’s awkward. At the start, that’s because the women are new at what they’re doing. Hugh Grant and the girls are good throughout, but very good at the beginning of the scene.Unfortunately, this first scene with all three of the main characters drags on without building natural tension. The young women don’t seem to pick up on the little red flags. Then suddenly they act tense.Despite the man’s increasingly odd (but polite) behavior, and the twists of events, I felt curious, but not compelled or fascinated by the whole thing. In retrospect, it really seemed like some important information was edited out that would’ve made it all fit together. Just unsatisfying.

Intellectual horror. Yeah!
Hugh Grant stretching his acting muscles to deliver one of his best performances. Can’t wait to see what future rolls he’ll be offered due to this achievement. A rare addition to the horror genre, it has a multifaceted depth that allows you to view it from several different perspectives. There are twists that you don’t see coming because you’ve been lulled into a false sense of familiarity by something that seemed obvious. As is said at one point…can’t tell if your playing chess or checkers. It has so many layers that it’s worth another viewing to peel back the ones my brain sensed were there but couldn’t quite fit in. Great directing, acting, atmosphere and dialog. Would love to see Mr. Reed and his house’s origin story. They could name it, “Heretics Birth”,

Quite good and nuanced
Having grown up fundie-adjacent, and having escaped in adolescence, I appreciated this one.People who say the script lacks nuance aren’t paying attention. There are at least three different ways to read the ending, all valid. My preference is that Sister Barnes loved Sister Paxton–which is hinted at from their first conversation and gains further traction as Sister Barnes takes on many more worldly qualities like the IUD and familiarity with pop and modern culture. We have seen love give partners and mothers hideous strength when it counts. In the context of the movie, love is the one true religion that matters–a bizarre twist for a psychological horror movie, but I like it.Pacing is tight and every scene with Hugh Grant on screen is mesmerizing. I am digging his villain arc.I take off one star because of what some other reviewers have noted–the “prayer doesn’t work” scene. I actually like the inclusion of the study proving this in the script, but if the scriptwriters had read the abstract, they’d know the problem is much worse than that. Prayer gives people performance anxiety, and their outcomes are worse than for people who don’t get prayed for. Prayer is counterproductive! There was a good opportunity to prove that two hands working achieves far more than two hands clasped in prayer ever will.Religion as control and the arguments for iterations are not new–my favorite iteration of these (see what I did there?) is probably Gore Vidal’s “Julian,” which freed me from the last shackles of fundie-ness. I do think the arguments could have been given a bit more depth, but that might have come at the cost of the pacing, which is excellent. Finally a movie that is tight and quick and suspenseful.Watch this one on a stormy night for maximum effect.
