Heartwarming, Funny, and Unforgettable
A League of Their Own is an absolute classic — a perfect blend of humor, heart, and history. Set during World War II, it tells the inspiring story of the women who stepped up to play professional baseball while the men were off at war. The cast is phenomenal: Geena Davis is effortlessly strong and graceful, Tom Hanks is hilarious and surprisingly touching, and the entire ensemble brings real personality and depth to their roles. The film manages to be both entertaining and meaningful, celebrating the power of teamwork, perseverance, and breaking barriers. It’s packed with memorable moments, iconic lines (“There’s no crying in baseball!”), and a whole lot of heart. Whether you’re a sports fan or not, A League of Their Own is a feel-good film that stands the test of time.

Robert A. Williams, PhD –
highly fictionalized film of USA’s first professional women’s baseball league
Dottie Hanson, played by actress Geena Davis, is pretty but married, and also empathetic and smart. To help her younger sister realize her dreams for a life beyond the farm, the pair accepts the New York recruiter’s invitation (played by Jon Lovitz) to attend the tryouts for the fledgling All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (it should be noted that Dottie would have been considered a ‘woman’ in this time period because she is married, whereas single women were referred to as ‘girls’). The recruiter signed over a hundred of baseball and softball’s finest from Canada and the USA to the tryouts in Chicago. Once the team is selected and a team manager is hired – Jimmy Dugan, played by Tom Hanks, the film becomes less nostalgia and increasingly comedic. Dugan is a washed-up home run hitter and alcoholic who aimlessly spits tobacco and struck out in life with two failed marriages. He is also initially against women playing baseball, although the grit and heart of his players slowly erodes his unfounded bias. Dugan’s baseball past continues to attract fans for his autograph, which his employers recognize is profitable. Memorable teammates played by actresses Lori Petty, Madonna, and Rosie O’Donnell provide a comedy cast of hilarious on-the-field and off-the-field antics as the ‘girls’ blaze a trail to the World Series in this highly fictionalized film loosely based on a true story. The film concludes with Dottie choosing to return to her married life in Oregon after one memorable season and her sister staying in Racine, Wisconsin with her new team, while Dugan stays manager of his team.Although touted as a comedy, compared to Major League, a 1989 film starring Tom Beringer, Charlie Sheen, and Corbin Bernsen, this film was slow-moving and seldom hilarious. In short, I found it predictable and a bit of a grind to watch. Nonetheless, there were some touching scenes from the several back stories, especially the father/daughter relationship and sibling rivalry. The Library of Congress liked the film much more than me, calling it “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant”, according to a reference (no. 3) at Wikipedia.org . The film’s scriptwriters seemed cognizant of sociology’s hegemony theory, going so far as changing the actual Mr. Wrigley into a fictional character – Walter Harvey of Harvey Bars. This movie likely staved off any potential lawsuits for defamation of character.

some inappropriate parts, but overall, it is kid-friendly!

Oh the nostalgia!
A classic! My daughters are getting older so with that said, we’ve been watching movies that I loved as a young girl and boy, this was a top one for me as a teenager. Those were my softball years as well. So on our last pizza movie night, we all gathered in the living room to watch A League Of Their Own and to my surprise, not one single kid got up and left the entire movie. My kids range in age from 17 down to 7 and they all enjoyed it.

Got What I ordered
Finally, after a second try from a previous seller, this DVD set was not missing disk one which contains subtitle options and the commentary. There is a second disk with just special features but it was the movie with the audio commentary I wanted which is not available on other versions of this classic movie. Perfect for a Tom Hanks movie marathon, the other talented actors help bring to life a story that I never tire of re-watching.

No Crying in Baseball
I absolutely love this movie. I grew up playing softball and in a family who played and loved baseball. Even if you don’t love the sport this story is heartfelt, hilarious, and totally worth watching.Actors are excellent and who doesn’t love Tom Hanks and Geena Davis. All the women are memorable and can actually play baseball. No CGI and the focus is on the team the love of the game and the challenges they face during a time of war.To me it’s timeless to me. I first saw it as a teenager and I’m in my 40’s now. It’s sentimental to me all these years later and seems timeless. It will make you smile, laugh, and maybe even cry and touch your heart which is rare with movies now. A must see.

A classic for all generations.
A classic movie with comedy and historical value. I made my teenage sons watch this with me and now they quote it too “There’s no crying in baseball!” Madonna, Rosie, and Tom Hanks deliver.

A Very Special Film
A beautifully crafted film, this one is all about the character development, and believe me, this film is chock full of characters, and stars. It’s definitely a comedy, but with a nostalgic edge that always leaves me a bit happy/sad at the end. I’ve seen the film many times and will look forward to my next viewing, knowing that I’m in for a completely involving two hours. This is NOT an action or adventure film, this is a touching look back at a forgotten period of time that deserves the attention this film brings. A good Saturday afternoon film with a bowl of popcorn and maybe a few tissues : )

What’s there not to love!
Seriously, what’s not to love? Tom Hanks, Geena Davis, Madonna, Lori Petty, and best of all, directed by ‘Laverne’ herself- Penny Marshall. What an awesome movie. I will not get into the nitty-gritty of it, but if you love baseball, good acting, and great directing, this movie is for you. This is a feel-good movie and can be played anytime. This means that you shouldn’t worry about offending your guests or anything like that.Trust me, I had a gathering and I had ‘Something About Mary’ playing in the background, and guess what, some people got offended. Not my friends, but the plus 1 or 2 that they brought. So, back to this, get it in 4K. The picture is vivid and so awesome to watch. The sound is super clear and crisp and you will love watching this in this format. On the fence? Because you have a copy in DVD and Blu-ray already? I do too. Just get it in 4K. Worth it.

Magnificent Film
I love this movie so much that I can’t stand the thought of having to look for it on a streaming service when I need to watch it.
