Bob Marley: One Like
From a production standpoint, “One Love” is above par. It was well cast and well-acted, with Kingsley Ben-Adir as Bob Marley and Lashana Lynch as Rita Marley. The attention given to the details (clothes, locations, accents, etc.) to accurately depict the Jamaican culture, as well as the Rastafari life-style were impressive. It made the film seamless in terms of believability. A major high-light was the soundtrack. The use of Marley’s songs were well chosen and effectively placed in the story line. In addition, the music rehearsal scenes and concert recreations were convincing and among the better within music-related bio-pics. It was fun to watch the rehearsal of “I Shot the Sheriff,” the recording session for “Jamming”, and the creation of “Exodus”.As someone who didn’t know a lot about Bob Marley, I appreciated what was presented in “One Love.” I didn’t know about all the political unrest of Jamaica and Marley’s involvement. I also learned more about Rastafarian beliefs and practices. For me, deliberate dialog and scenes about Rastafari added to the understanding of Marley’s convictions and motivation. There’s even a series of somewhat mystic scenes of a shadowed horseman chasing a very young Marley through a burning field. Near the end of the movie (spoiler alert), boy-Marley reaches up to the shadowy rider and it’s revealed to be Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia, who was revered as the black messiah and the rebirth of Christ. Now . . . if you’ve read this far, you might sense a “but” coming. I’ll use the less phonetically explosive word, “however.”However, for all the wonderful attention to details, I didn’t find the movie entertaining. The movie felt longer than its hour and 47 minutes. There were practical distractions, like the audio. Many of the actors were “low talkers” and I would have to turn up the volume. Then a music scene would come along, and the volume would suddenly be blasting. Was that a post-mix oversite? There were also visual elements. For example, much, if not most, of the movie takes place within dark and shadow-filled sets. Aside from the beginning of the movie where you get a brief glimpse of Jamaica, outdoor scenes and sunlight were not given equal time. Also included in the visual palette were dark and muted colors worn by the actors. Then there was the pacing. In my humble opinion, the film would have benefited from some editing. As I watched the film, I reached a point of fatigue, wanting the blandness to end. For all the drama that was portrayed, or alluded to, the real-life intensity and consequences had to have been deeper. I’m not forgetting the scenes between Bob and his wife, or when he was in Africa and confronted his promoter. I’m referring to the constant arcing pressures from his home country, family, career, health, etc. This was a man with a lot on his mind!I’m glad I watched “One Love.” I enjoyed the soundtrack, and I learned new details related to Marley’s life. I imagine committed fans will appreciate his story being brought to the big screen, but as a casual fan, I liked it, but didn’t love it.

“I” and “I” Love
Flashback Alert! This movie contains several flashback and flash forward scenes interspersed throughout present scenes. Admittedly I had a slightly difficult time following the storyline on the first watch. During the second viewing I was able to follow the story with ease. The screenwriter, producer, director, actors and the entire crew did an amazing job of presenting the private, public, personal and professional side of Bob Marley. I could feel the intimacy he shared with his band members, business associates, children and especially his wife. The love he had for his country and fellow Jamaicans was deep and heartfelt. This biopic was respectfully done with care and restraint. In other words, the film contained enough plot material and details to know something about Bob Marley and what he stood for without being overbearing. It maintained a clear focus. A great soundtrack kept the story moving musically. I also enjoyed the bonus features which made this purchase even more worthwhile.
