    3.5 Stars…

Slightly annoying, definitely hellboy, sorta out of pocket, and tried too hard to be intelligent. It’s booring and weird for the most part, but not a weird kinda egdey way. More like a Southern Babble kinds of way. I for one am not a fan of southern fairy tales, and this sort of reminds me why. Definitely not my favorite Hellboy. I liked the last Hellboy more, but definitely not saying much. The First two hellboys were charming, and kind of relatable and cute. THEY were weird in a good way. However I shouldn’t compare, even though it’s almost impossible to.The facts about this movie is it had bad execution about tackling cosmic (if you’d call it that) horror. Maybe it was existential horror? The Crooked Man felt more like an object, then a character. The badguys were wibbly wobbly at best, and not scary at all. Just sorta there. It tried to create rules and tried to be profound about it, but just read flat. Yeah, Flat… That’s a good way to describe this film… Characters were flat and the back stories were flat. The CGI spider was god awful, and did not read well. What did win me over was a lot of the set design, that was kind of cool. There were moments and times where I was satisfied. Wasn’t a complete loss, but definitely wasn’t a win. Also the guy who played Hellboy wasn’t bad, the smoking did not feel natural. He wasn’t too funny, line delivery was okay. The Shovel and gun were cool. The bone was cool. I liked Tom’s character, but still felt flat. I think there were way too many expectations put on the audience. The off beat titles like the witches ball were awkward as hell and didn’t sell. UGH! I definitely liked it more then I thought it would, but def wouldn’t buy it… BUT happy I watched it…

Hellboy: The Crooked Man May Be the Scariest Hellboy Film of All

I have posted a review on my “Negromancer” blog which gives details on my feelings about this movie. If you have ever watched a Hellboy movie, then, this one certainly deserves your attention. Rather than being a big fantasy film, “Hellboy: The Crooked Man” is a low-key, backwoods horror movie with action-thriller elements. I really liked it. I wish that it had been successful enough to warrant a sequel by the same creative team.

Incredible Folk Horror Movie starring Hellboy. we NEED a Hellboy TV series!

I went into this movie with pretty low expectations and I was blown away. It took a little bit to hook me but after a short while, being thrown directly into what felt like an episodic folk horror Hellboy adventure, I was sold. This is not the comic book hero style film youd expect from GDT, nor the effects heavy film we got with the last one… this is clearly a lower budget Hellboy, and thats what works PERFECTLY. The story line is great, the supporting cast is incredible, the vibe and atmosphere are everything here. If anything this proves that Hellboy could do really well as an episodic series where every episode Hellboy goes to take on another demonic entity, and continues on his way to the next one in the next episode. That said, I am hoping for as many sequels as possible to this Hellboy. Its incredible and its absolutely worth a watch if you arent going in expecting a cinematic hero blockbuster, but more so a lower key folk horror movie that stars Hellboy.

    Well… that was something

Very disappointing, I’m not sure what was going on with the production of this, but it’s a pass for me dog. Just a lot of try hard and cliche dialogue, if I hear “we’ve got company” one more time in a movie, I swear! It was confusing without a real direction in storytelling. The only good things that I could pull from this is the camera work and shots were interesting and the makeup and special effects were decent.

Complete nonsense and garbage.. Don’t waste your time.

Rented this for $1.99 and I want my money and my time back. I had to look and see if this was legitimately part of the series, which it did not feel like it was in any way. None of the characters from the previous films were in this movie, only a poorly casted Hellboy. The plot didn’t feel like it lined up with the previous movies either. The plot was so ridiculously stupid I had to stop and try to finish it several times. Even at the end, there were plot holes that weren’t answered, but could have been easily. The entire movie looked like it was a 15 year old counterfeit recording of a counterfeit movie. The lighting was horrible, the shots were horrible, the transitions were bad, and I honestly think they filmed this all on an Iphone 3 or 4, and the movie had a budget of about $5,000.My best interpretation of this movie is think, The Blair Witch Project part 2, but then as they were filming on day one, someone said, “you know what would be cool, lets add hellboy, I can make us a costume”.

Finally an adaptation of Hellboy COMICS!

It’s not perfect, but it does what it does well. It’s not meant to be a blockbuster epic superhero story. Hellboy is a “working man” who has already seen a lot and also has an unfortunate origin. Jack Kesy plays the character perfectly and the other cast members are all doing excellent work. Hey look, it’s Joseph Marcell, Geoffrey Butler from Fresh Prince, and he’s having the time of his life! Jefferson White and Adeline Rudolph are also doing excellent work. The pacing in the 3rd act is a little weak, but the ending still delivers solid entertainment.Think X-Files meets Blair Witch with a dash of Indiana Jones in the mix and you’ve got this movie. It’s not the darkest, most serious, story, but it understands what it is, a horror-driven pulp detective story with a touch of heart and humor. This is also the first time that a Hellboy movie was trying to be what the Hellboy Comics are. This is almost a one to one retelling of the graphic mini-series of the same name by masters Mike Mignola (pronounced Min-yo-la) and Richard Corben (RIP). This is a movie that is not afraid to be just like the book it’s adapting and then some, without being preoccupied with what “hollywood” and “modern audiences” want. This would work very well as a pilot for a tv series and should, at least, set the standard for what Hellboy movies should feel like in the future. It’s not perfect, as I said. Sometimes the music editing is a little jarring or repetitive ( that one crow chittering noise is overused a bit) but it feels like a horror-pulp 50s detective story in the woods, and that’s exactly as it should be.If you end up not liking it, it might just not be for you, but it’s perfect for any fan of the Hellboy comics or similar stories. As a longtime reader of the comics, I am over the moon with what we got. It’s just sad it wasn’t brought to theaters in the US. More please!

Find out for yourself – watch it!

Hellboy: The Crooked Man is my personal favorite of all the live-action Hellboy films (including the cast), and is certainly one of the best adaptations of comic to big-screen to be found. It was a ‘what the heck’ rental and it turned out to be a solid outing in every way. I’m thankful this wasn’t a major, big-budget production because it is a better movie for it.I’d like to see more films from the same team.I rented it first, and now plan on purchasing the blu-ray so I have a physical copy to watch a few more times with friends that haven’t seen it.I’d say to check it out, especially if you’ve ever like’d any of Mike Mignola’s work.

Decent but more for the fans of the actual comics.

It’s low budget. It’s more like an episode of a TV show than a big screen movie. Let’s get that out of the way. Those are some big drawbacks obviously but there are some good things here. For a cinematic romp and a good time the first two movies cannot be beaten. GDTs vision was more epic and fun. This one is more like watching the graphic novel come to life. It’s downbeat and more dark and sinister. But that is the flavor of the source material.Truth be told I actually preferred this one to the 2019 remake. That one suffered from trying to straddle both the previous movies and stay true to the source and ended up a mess of trying to do too much.Jack Kesy does a good turn as Hellboy as well. I would like to see him reprise the role. It’s a shame that the budget could not truly lift this film up to what it deserved and give it a broader appeal. All in all it’s a decent film if you are a fan of the source material.

Most faithful Hellboy adaptation ever made.

Hellboy: The Crooked Man is by far the most faithful cinema adaptation of any of Mike Mignola’s work ever made, hands down. There is no contest whatsoever. Whether you like it or not, this is also the most accurate depiction of the character himself. I think my favorite visual depiction of the character in cinema, just as far as the way he looked, is the 2019 interpretation. And that film was also a pretty good adaptation of “The Wild Hunt” and “The Storm and the Fury.” But, while I’ve generally liked all the interpretations of the character, none of them have really captured what he is like in the books as well as Jack Kesy’s performance… Sorry, but that is simply the case. The story’s extensive exploration of the religious aspects of Hellboy appeals to me. We get a bit of a deeper exploration of who Hellboy’s mother is, a 16th century witch who’s two children, a Catholic religious sister and a Catholic priest, once chained her coffin shut in an attempt to prevent Hellboy’s demon father from taking her to Hell. That’s in another story, but its a good one. It’s an important aspect of Hellboy that was neglected entirely in cinematic adaptations until the 2019 film. The creepy occult culture of Appalachia is portrayed about as well as the book does it. Verbatim most of the time, I would say. The Crooked man himself is terrifying, the witches are right off the page. Every actor seems to be the result of an inspired casting decision, which is rare anymore. Everything about it, visually, is fantastic. Just remember, if you’ve been a fan of movies depicting this character in the past, this is not a kid’s movie. This is a genuine Hellboy adaptation. It’s far more PUMPKINHEAD than it is CAPTAIN AMERICA. So don’t say nobody warned you.
