Is Aladdin Part 2 Coming? Latest Updates on the Live-Action Sequel

Disney’s 2019 live-action Aladdin, directed by Guy Ritchie and starring Mena Massoud, Naomi Scott, and Will Smith, was a surprise box office triumph, grossing over $1 billion worldwide. The film’s success made a sequel seem inevitable, and in 2020, Disney officially announced that Aladdin 2 was in development. Writers John Gatins (Flight, Real Steel) and Andrea Berloff (Straight Outta Compton) were tapped to craft the screenplay, with Ritchie expected to return to direct.

But five years later, the sequel’s future hangs in limbo.

🧞 Development Delays & Cast Uncertainty

Despite the initial momentum, Aladdin 2 has faced multiple setbacks. The global pandemic, industry strikes, and shifting priorities at Disney have all contributed to the delay. In a candid 2023 interview, Mena Massoud admitted the sequel was “very unlikely at this point,” noting that the project had stalled and that he hadn’t heard updates in years.

While Will Smith was reportedly set to reprise his role as Genie, his post-Oscars career turbulence may have complicated casting decisions. Naomi Scott (Princess Jasmine) and Navid Negahban (The Sultan) were also expected to return, but no official confirmations have been made. Rumors suggest Marwan Kenzari could reprise his role as Jafar if the sequel follows a villain-centric plot, though Disney has hinted the story may diverge from the animated sequel The Return of Jafar.

📖 A New Tale from Agrabah?

Rather than retelling The Return of Jafar, Disney reportedly planned an original story inspired by Middle Eastern folklore. This creative pivot could allow the sequel to explore fresh themes and introduce new characters, expanding the magical world of Agrabah beyond the familiar palace walls.

Interestingly, while Aladdin 2 remains in limbo, other adaptations of the tale are moving forward. A two-part horror reimagining titled Aladdin and Aladdin’s Revenge is currently in production, offering a twisted take on the classic story and highlighting the enduring appeal of the source material.
