27 Nights (27 noches) 2025
The 2025 Argentine film 27 Nights (Original Spanish title: 27 noches) is a comedy-drama directed by Daniel Hendler, who also stars in the movie. The screenplay, co-written by Hendler, Martín Mauregui, and Agustina Liendo, is based on the 2021 biographical fiction novel Veintisiete noches by Argentine author Natalia Zito, which was inspired by a real-life episode of elder abuse and wrongful committal. The film centers on Martha Hoffman (played by Marilú Marini), an eccentric and wealthy 83-year-old art collector and free spirit who is forcibly committed to a psychiatric clinic by her concerned, or perhaps calculating, daughters (played by Carla Peterson and Paula Grinszpan), who claim she is suffering from dementia. The title refers to the 27 days and nights Martha spends in the institution. Upon her return home, a sweet-natured but repressed judicial psychiatrist named Leandro Casares (Daniel Hendler) is appointed by the court to investigate her condition. The central question is whether Martha is genuinely ill and a danger to herself and her fortune due to her free-spending ways, or if she has simply chosen to live out her later years with absolute freedom, with the daughters attempting to control her inheritance. The film follows Casares' journey as the quick-witted Martha, with the help of her bohemian friends, subverts his formal examination and inspires him to loosen up and question his own views on aging, mental health, and social propriety. 27 Nights had its world premiere as the opening film of the 73rd San Sebastián International Film Festival on September 19, 2025, and was subsequently released globally on Netflix on October 17, 2025.
