Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (2012)
Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted (2012) continues the journey of the four Central Park Zoo animals—Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Melman the Giraffe, and Gloria the Hippopotamus—who are still determined to return home to New York City after their adventures in Madagascar and Africa. To do this, they travel to Monte Carlo to find the Penguins and Chimpanzees, who have been gambling to raise money for their airplane. Chaos ensues at the Monte Carlo Casino, attracting the attention of the ruthless, obsessive French Animal Control officer, Capitaine Chantel DuBois, who is determined to add Alex's lion head to her taxidermy collection. To evade DuBois, the group hastily joins a dilapidated traveling Circus Zaragoza, lying that they are American circus animals. While traveling across Europe to London—where they hope to impress an American promoter—Alex helps the depressed Siberian tiger Vitaly and the rest of the circus find their passion again by reinventing their acts. The film culminates in a spectacular circus performance and a final confrontation with DuBois back at the Central Park Zoo, where the gang ultimately realizes their true home is now with their new friends in the circus. The film features the returning star-studded voice cast, including Ben Stiller as Alex the Lion, Chris Rock as Marty the Zebra, David Schwimmer as Melman the Giraffe, and Jada Pinkett Smith as Gloria the Hippopotamus. They are joined by Sacha Baron Cohen as King Julien XIII and Cedric the Entertainer as Maurice. The main antagonist is voiced by Frances McDormand as the formidable Capitaine Chantel DuBois. New main characters from the circus include Jessica Chastain as Gia the Jaguar (Alex’s love interest), Martin Short as Stefano the Sea Lion, and Bryan Cranston as Vitaly the Siberian Tiger. The film was directed by a trio: Eric Darnell, Conrad Vernon, and Tom McGrath, the latter also voicing the Penguin leader, Skipper. Madagascar 3 was the most critically acclaimed installment in the original trilogy, receiving largely positive reviews (a certified fresh rating of 78% on Rotten Tomatoes). Critics praised the film's stunning, vibrant 3D visuals, the incredibly high-energy and frenetic pace of the action, and the addition of compelling new circus characters. Many reviewers specifically highlighted the genius of including Noah Baumbach (known for more cerebral films like The Squid and the Whale) as a co-writer, which added a surprising emotional depth and improved the character dynamics compared to the previous sequel. The chase sequence through Monaco and the final circus performance, set to Katy Perry's "Firework," were frequently cited as highlights. The film was a massive commercial success, becoming the highest-grossing film in the entire franchise. Produced on a budget of $145 million, it opened strongly in North America with $60.3 million. It went on to gross $216.4 million domestically (US and Canada) and a spectacular $530.5 million internationally, for a total worldwide gross of over $746.9 million. This made it one of the highest-grossing animated films of 2012 and cemented the Madagascar franchise as a commercial powerhouse for DreamWorks Animation. As a library title, Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted is widely available across multiple platforms in India, though the specific subscription service that carries it may change. Currently, the film is available for streaming via subscription on JioCinema (with a premium plan) and may also be available on Disney+ Hotstar depending on current licensing agreements. The film is consistently available to rent or buy on platforms like Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and Google Play Movies. The film includes audio and subtitle options in various languages, including Hindi subtitles.
