The Autopsy of Jane Doe 2016
The 2016 supernatural horror film The Autopsy of Jane Doe, directed by André Øvredal, centers on father-and-son coroners, Tommy Tilden (Brian Cox) and Austin Tilden (Emile Hirsch), operating a small-town Virginia morgue. Their quiet night is interrupted by the arrival of an unidentified female corpse—the titular Jane Doe (Olwen Catherine Kelly)—found unblemished at the scene of a brutal, inexplicable multiple homicide. As they perform the autopsy, they discover increasingly bizarre and gruesome internal findings that contradict her serene exterior: her wrists and ankles are shattered, her organs are lacerated, her lungs are severely burned, and a cloth-wrapped tooth bearing cryptic symbols and the date 1693 is found inside her stomach. The external autopsy begins to unlock supernatural phenomena, including power outages, ghostly apparitions of other corpses, and a fierce storm trapping them inside the morgue. Tommy ultimately deduces that Jane Doe was a victim of 17th-century torture intended to execute a suspected witch, but the ritualistic brutality inadvertently transformed her into a malevolent entity, a living corpse sustained by suffering and capable of controlling the dead. The film culminates in a tragic climax where Austin's girlfriend, Emma (Ophelia Lovibond), is accidentally killed by Tommy, who then sacrifices himself to the entity in a futile attempt to save his son; Austin eventually falls to his death in an escape attempt, leaving Jane Doe's body untouched by the carnage. Critically, the movie was well-received, praised for its atmospheric single-location setting, taut direction, and the strong performances of Cox and Hirsch, with many critics calling it one of the better horror films of 2016. However, some reviews found the film's second half and exposition less effective than its tense, procedural opening. At the box office, it had a very limited domestic release, earning only about $10,474 in the US, but it was successful internationally, grossing approximately $6.17 million worldwide. For streaming, the film is often available on services like AMC+ and can be rented or purchased digitally on platforms such as Apple TV and Google Play Movies.
