Adam MacDonald
Adam MacDonald is a Canadian filmmaker and actor, renowned for his work in the horror genre. Born in Montreal and currently based in Toronto, MacDonald began his career as an actor in the late 1990s, appearing in television series such as Are You Afraid of the Dark? and Big Wolf on Campus. He transitioned to directing with his feature debut, Backcountry (2014), a wilderness survival thriller that premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) and garnered critical acclaim for its suspenseful storytelling and realistic portrayal of nature's dangers. Following Backcountry, MacDonald directed Pyewacket (2017), a psychological horror film that also premiered at TIFF and received positive reviews for its atmospheric tension and character-driven narrative. In 2024, he directed Out Come the Wolves, a survival horror film set in the Canadian wilderness, which was released by IFC Films and Shudder. Beyond feature films, MacDonald has directed multiple seasons of the horror anthology series Slasher, including seasons 3, 4, and the upcoming season 5. He has also ventured into virtual reality filmmaking with Be Mine, a horror experience produced by Eli Roth and starring Peyton List. MacDonald's work is characterized by a deep appreciation for nature's duality, often exploring the tension between its beauty and its potential for danger. His films frequently feature minimalist storytelling and immersive environments, drawing inspiration from classic horror influences and his own experiences in the wilderness.
