Alan Ruck
Alan Ruck (born July 1, 1956) is a celebrated American actor whose career has spanned over four decades, characterized by his ability to play enduringly relatable and often neurotic characters. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Ruck developed an interest in theater during high school and later earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in drama from the University of Illinois in 1979. He began his professional career in the Chicago theater scene, which led to his film debut alongside Sean Penn in Bad Boys (1983). However, it was his iconic portrayal of the hypochondriac, anxiety-ridden best friend Cameron Frye in the 1986 classic Ferris Bueller's Day Off that turned him into a pop-culture mainstay. Despite being 29 at the time, his performance as a repressed teenager resonated deeply with audiences and remains one of the most beloved roles in teen cinema history. Following his breakout, Ruck became a prolific presence in both film and television. In the 1990s, he appeared in major blockbusters such as Speed (as an obnoxious tourist), Twister (as the eccentric storm chaser "Rabbit"), and Star Trek: Generations (as Captain John Harriman). On the small screen, he achieved long-term success as the lecherous political consultant Stuart Bondek on the ABC sitcom Spin City (1996–2002). After years of steady work in series like Greek and The Exorcist, Ruck experienced a massive career resurgence with his role as Connor Roy, the delusional and overlooked eldest son of a billionaire family, in the hit HBO series Succession (2018–2023). This performance earned him widespread critical acclaim, including a Primetime Emmy nomination in 2023 for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series. In 2026, Ruck is slated for another high-profile project, appearing as the father of Poppy Wright (played by Emily Bader) in the Netflix film adaptation of Emily Henry's People We Meet on Vacation. He is also set to star in the upcoming films Hershey, directed by Mark Waters, and the thriller Corporate Retreat, alongside Odeya Rush. Outside of his professional life, Ruck has been married to actress Mireille Enos since 2008, with whom he has two children, in addition to two children from his first marriage to Claudia Stefany.
