Albert Brooks is an American actor, comedian, director, and writer, born Albert Lawrence Einstein on July 22, 1947, in Beverly Hills, California. He hails from a Jewish show business family; his father, Harry Einstein, was a radio comedian known as "Parkyakarkus," and his mother, Thelma Leeds, was an actress. Brooks is the younger brother of the late comedian Bob Einstein. He attended Beverly Hills High School alongside future collaborators Rob Reiner and Richard Dreyfuss. Brooks began his career in stand-up comedy, gaining national attention with appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show and The Tonight Show. He later transitioned to film, making his directorial debut with Real Life (1979), a satirical take on documentary filmmaking. His subsequent films, including Modern Romance (1981), Lost in America (1985), and Defending Your Life (1991), showcased his unique blend of neurotic humor and existential themes. In 1987, he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Broadcast News. Brooks has also made significant contributions to animation, voicing the character Marlin in Pixar's Finding Nemo (2003) and its sequel Finding Dory (2016). His voice work extends to roles in The Simpsons and The Secret Life of Pets (2016). In 2023, Brooks was the subject of the HBO documentary Albert Brooks: Defending My Life, directed by his longtime friend Rob Reiner. The film offers an intimate look at Brooks's life and career, featuring candid conversations between the two. Brooks is married to artist Kimberly Shlain, daughter of surgeon and writer Leonard Shlain. The couple has two children and resides in Santa Monica, California.
