Alessandro Genovesi

Alessandro Genovesi (born January 10, 1973, in Milan) is a versatile Italian director, screenwriter, playwright, and occasional actor who first gained recognition in theater. His breakout came in 2007 with the award‑winning stage comedy Happy Family, which he wrote and directed; this led to the successful 2010 film adaptation for which he co-wrote the script and served as assistant director . In 2011, Genovesi made his solo feature directorial debut with the hit comedy The Worst Week of My Life, adapted from a British sitcom, which spawned sequels and established his signature of lighthearted, character-driven comedies. Over the next decade, he helmed a string of popular films—including The Worst Christmas of My Life (2012), Soap Opera (2014), What a Beautiful Surprise (2015), and the culturally significant My Big Gay Italian Wedding (2018)—often also co-writing the scripts. More recently, he directed When Mom Is Away (2019) and its sequels, with the latest installment releasing in 2025, as well as the Netflix tween-romance The Tearsmith (2024), and the mystery-comedy 7 Women and a Murder (2021). Known for his warm humor and familial themes, Genovesi continues to be a driving force in contemporary Italian cinema.
