Born in Glenview, Illinois, she began her professional journey in 2009 with a role on the soap opera As the World Turns before making a significant impact in the musical theater world. She is particularly celebrated for originating the role of Heather Duke in the Off-Broadway production of Heathers: The Musical (2014), a performance that showcased her vocal prowess and helped launch her into mainstream television. Lee became a household name for her portrayal of Emily Kang in the NBC musical comedy-drama Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist (2020–2021) and its subsequent holiday film, where she played the pragmatic yet deeply caring sister-in-law to the titular character.
