Amy Madigan

Amy Marie Madigan (born September 11, 1950, in Chicago, Illinois) is a versatile and commanding American actress, singer, and producer renowned for her emotionally honest performances. The daughter of Newsweek journalist John J. Madigan and amateur actress Dolores Madigan, she grew up in a Catholic, Irish-American household and discovered a passion for performance early—singing piano tunes and performing in school plays before earning a philosophy degree from Marquette University and later studying acting at the Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute. She began her screen career in the early 1980s with TV roles in Hart to Hart and CHiPs, and made a striking dramatic debut as a pregnant inmate in Love Child (1982). Her breakout years included critically acclaimed performances in Twice in a Lifetime (earning her an Academy Award nomination), and hit films like Places in the Heart, Field of Dreams, Uncle Buck, and Roe vs. Wade, where she won a Golden Globe. Madigan has also excelled in later screen work—earning accolades for Gone Baby Gone, and memorable television roles, including Iris Crowe on HBO’s Carnivàle, Dr. Wyatt on Grey’s Anatomy, and a maternal figure in Fringe. On stage, she has performed Off-Broadway and on Broadway in productions such as The Lucky Spot, A Streetcar Named Desire, and Buried Child, earning Drama Desk and Theatre World awards. In her personal life, she married actor Ed Harris in 1983 after co-starring in Places in the Heart, and the pair have since appeared together in numerous projects. They share a daughter, Lily, born in 1993. A former musician who fronted the band Jelly and even appeared in Playboy to promote it, Amy Madigan brings a multifaceted creative sensibility to her work, noted for its raw intensity, intelligence, and emotional range. She remains a respected figure in film, television, and theater, continuing to deliver powerful performances across genres.
