André Darryl Carson is an American Democratic politician who has served as the U.S. Representative for Indiana's 7th congressional district since assuming office on March 11, 2008, succeeding his late grandmother, Julia Carson. Born on October 16, 1974, in Indianapolis, Indiana, Carson is a proud Indianapolis native who graduated from Arsenal Technical High School and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in criminal justice and management from Concordia University Wisconsin (2003) and a Master of Science degree in business management from Indiana Wesleyan University (2005). Before his election to Congress, Carson had an extensive career in law enforcement and intelligence, working as an investigative officer for the Indiana State Excise Police (1997–2006) and later in the anti-terrorism division of the Indiana Department of Homeland Security and the Indiana Intelligence Fusion Center. He was also a member of the Indianapolis City-County Council from 2007 to 2008. In Congress, Carson is a Senior Whip for the House Democratic Caucus and serves on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence—where he is the Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on the Central Intelligence Agency—and the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure. He is notable for being the second Muslim elected to the U.S. Congress and for chairing the subcommittee that oversaw the first public congressional hearing on Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon (UAPs) in over 50 years. He is focused on fighting for the middle class, public safety, and infrastructure, securing hundreds of millions in federal funding for Indianapolis projects, and is a champion for civil rights and equality. Carson is the father of one child, a daughter named Salimah, and lives in Center Township.
