Andrea Louise Martin is a critically acclaimed American and Canadian actress, comedian, singer, and writer, born on January 15, 1947, in Portland, Maine, to Armenian-American parents. After graduating from Emerson College, she relocated to Toronto in the 1970s, where she became a foundational member of the legendary Canadian sketch comedy series, SCTV (Second City Television). Her work on SCTV from 1976 to 1984, alongside contemporaries like John Candy, Catherine O'Hara, Eugene Levy, and Martin Short (who became her brother-in-law), earned her widespread recognition and two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Writing. She is most famous from the show for creating and playing iconic characters, most notably the leopard-print-wearing, highly strung station manager Edith Prickley, as well as Pirini Scleroso and children's entertainer Mrs. Falbo. Martin's career is marked by exceptional versatility, spanning television, film, and a hugely successful stage career. She is one of the most decorated performers in Broadway history, holding the record for the most Tony Award nominations for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. She has won two Tony Awards for Best Featured Actress in a Musical: first for My Favorite Year in 1993, and second for the 2013 revival of Pippin, where she famously played the grandmother, Berthe. On screen, she is widely beloved as the boisterous and memorable Aunt Voula in the comedy film series My Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002, 2016, 2023), and has had notable roles in films like Wag the Dog (1997), Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001), and the original horror film Black Christmas (1974). More recently, she has been a recurring presence in prestige television, including roles in the NBC sitcom Great News, the Hulu series Difficult People, the supernatural drama Evil (2021–2024), and the hit mystery comedy Only Murders in the Building.
