He is an alumnus of Indiana University Bloomington, where he initially studied Philosophy and Anthropology but discovered his passion for acting through short films and university plays, notably a pivotal role in Eric Bogosian's subUrbia during his senior year. He began his professional career with bit parts in short films, moving into television with a recurring role on the comedy-drama series Privileged and co-starring as Fisher in the cult-favorite comedy Greek from 2007 to 2011. West gained significant recognition for his role as the villain Gareth in the AMC horror drama The Walking Dead, appearing as a guest star in Season 4 before being promoted to a series regular for Season 5, a performance that earned him a Saturn Award nomination. He also portrayed the adult Henry Mills on the seventh and final season of the ABC fantasy drama Once Upon a Time. In film, he starred as the titular character in the 2015 indie feature Walter.
