Andrés Arturo García Menéndez, widely known as Andy Garcia, is a highly respected Cuban-American actor, director, and musician with a career spanning over four decades. Born in Havana, Cuba, on April 12, 1956, his family fled to Miami, Florida, in 1961 following the Cuban Revolution. In high school, a bout of mononucleosis ended his promising basketball career and led him to discover his passion for acting. He began his career in the late 1970s, with early roles in television series like Hill Street Blues and Murder, She Wrote.Garcia's breakthrough came in 1987 when he was cast in Brian De Palma's blockbuster crime drama The Untouchables. His performance as the rookie cop-turned-federal agent earned him widespread critical acclaim and solidified his status as a popular Hollywood actor. This was followed by another notable role in Ridley Scott's Black Rain (1989). However, it was his performance as the hot-headed Vincent Mancini in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather Part III (1990) that earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor, cementing his place in cinematic history.Throughout the 1990s, Garcia continued to star in a variety of films, including Internal Affairs (1990), When a Man Loves a Woman (1994), and Things to Do in Denver When You're Dead (1995). A new generation of fans came to know him for his role as the sophisticated and vengeful casino tycoon Terry Benedict in Steven Soderbergh's Ocean's Eleven (2001) and its sequels, Ocean's Twelve (2004) and Ocean's Thirteen (2007).Beyond acting, Garcia has a strong connection to his Cuban heritage, which he has explored in his work as a director. He made his directorial debut with the documentary Cachao... Como Su Ritmo No Hay Dos (1993), which chronicled the life of Cuban mambo musician Israel "Cachao" López. In 2005, he co-wrote, directed, and starred in The Lost City, a passion project that served as a romantic love letter to pre-revolutionary Havana. More recently, he has appeared in films like Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018), The Mule (2018), and Book Club (2018) and its sequel, as well as the 2025 film Eenie Meanie.
