Ariana DeBose
Ariana DeBose is an American actress, singer, and dancer, celebrated for her dynamic performances on both stage and screen. Born on January 25, 1991, in Wilmington, North Carolina, she began her career as a contestant on So You Think You Can Dance in 2009, finishing in the top 20. She made her Broadway debut in 2011 with Bring It On: The Musical, followed by roles in Motown: The Musical (2013), Pippin (2014), and Hamilton (2015–2016) . DeBose's breakout film role came in 2021 when she portrayed Anita in Steven Spielberg's adaptation of West Side Story. Her performance earned her the Academy Award, BAFTA, and Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress . She also appeared in The Prom (2020) and voiced the character Asha in Disney's animated film Wish (2023). Beyond her acting career, DeBose is an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights. In December 2020, she co-founded the Unruly Hearts Initiative with her The Prom co-star Jo Ellen Pellman to support LGBTQ+ youth. DeBose is currently in a relationship with costume designer Sue Makkoo, whom she met while working on Summer: The Donna Summer Musical in 2017 . As of 2025, she continues to be active in the entertainment industry, with upcoming projects including Love Hurts and Scarpetta.
