Ayan Mukerji is a celebrated Indian filmmaker, screenwriter, and producer, known for his work in Hindi cinema. Born on August 15, 1983, in Kolkata, West Bengal, he hails from the prominent Mukherjee-Samarth family, which has a long history in the Indian film industry. His father, Deb Mukherjee, was a Bengali film actor, and his grandfather, Sashadhar Mukherjee, was a pioneering producer and one of the founders of Filmistan Studio. Ayan is also the cousin of actresses Kajol and Rani Mukerji. He dropped out of college to pursue filmmaking, starting his career as an assistant director on films like Swades (2004) and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006).Mukerji made a successful directorial debut with the coming-of-age comedy-drama Wake Up Sid (2009), starring Ranbir Kapoor and Konkona Sen Sharma. The film was both a critical and commercial success, earning him the Filmfare Award for Best Debut Director. He solidified his position as a top-tier filmmaker with his next project, the romantic comedy-drama Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013), which became one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of all time and earned him his second Filmfare nomination for Best Director. His most ambitious project to date is the fantasy action-adventure film Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva (2022), the first installment of a planned cinematic universe called the Astraverse. The film was a box office hit and received several awards for its technical excellence. He is currently directing the highly anticipated action thriller War 2, the next installment in the YRF Spy Universe, which is scheduled for release in 2025.
