Babak Anvari is a British-Iranian filmmaker, celebrated for his distinctive work in the horror and thriller genres. Born in 1983 in Tehran, Iran, Anvari later pursued his film education at the University of Westminster in London. He first gained significant attention for his short film "Two & Two" (2011), which received a BAFTA nomination.His feature film debut, "Under the Shadow" (2016), a Farsi-language supernatural horror film set during the Iran-Iraq War, brought him widespread critical acclaim. The film was the UK's official entry for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and won Anvari a BAFTA Award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer.Following this success, Anvari directed "Wounds" (2019), a psychological horror film starring Armie Hammer, Dakota Johnson, and Zazie Beetz, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. In 2022, he directed the Netflix thriller "I Came By." Anvari is known for his ability to weave social and political commentary into his genre films, often exploring themes of identity, displacement, and the psychological impact of conflict. He is also involved in production, serving as a producer or executive producer on several projects. His upcoming directorial work includes the film "Hallow Road" (2025) and an untitled "Cloverfield" sequel.
