Barry Levinson is an acclaimed American film director, screenwriter, and producer, born on April 6, 1942, in Baltimore, Maryland. He began his career in the 1970s as a comedy writer for television, notably winning two Emmys for his work on The Carol Burnett Show, and co-writing films like Mel Brooks' Silent Movie and High Anxiety, as well as the Oscar-nominated screenplay for ...And Justice for All. Levinson made his directorial debut with the semi-autobiographical, Baltimore-set film Diner (1982), which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay. His versatile filmography includes major commercial and critical hits like the baseball drama The Natural (1984), the war comedy Good Morning, Vietnam (1987), the Best Picture Oscar winner Rain Man (1988), for which he won the Academy Award for Best Director, and the period crime film Bugsy (1991), which earned him two more Oscar nominations. Levinson also made a significant impact on television as an executive producer and director, notably on the critically acclaimed series Homicide: Life on the Street and the HBO prison drama Oz. His later directorial credits include the political satire Wag the Dog (1997) and HBO films such as You Don't Know Jack and The Wizard of Lies. He is noted for a distinctive series of films set in his native Baltimore, which also includes Tin Men and Avalon.
