Rafael Aranda Roco Jr., professionally known as Bembol Roco, is a highly-acclaimed Filipino actor celebrated for his extensive work in both classic and contemporary Philippine cinema and television since the 1970s. Born on November 20, 1953, he rose to prominence for his critically acclaimed lead role as Julio Madiaga in Lino Brocka's 1975 masterpiece, Maynila: Sa mga Kuko ng Liwanag (Manila in the Claws of Light), a performance that cemented his status as one of the country's finest actors and made him part of the group known as the "Brocka babies." He has since collaborated with esteemed directors such as Ishmael Bernal and Brillante Mendoza, notably starring in the international co-production The Year of Living Dangerously (1982) and the Venice Film Festival entry Thy Womb (2012). Roco has garnered several awards and nominations, including a FAMAS Award for Best Actor, and continues to be an active presence in the industry, often in character and supporting roles in mainstream teleseryes and independent films, alongside his twin actor sons, Felix and Dominic Roco.
