Benjamin McKenzie Schenkkan, professionally known as Ben McKenzie, is an American actor, author, and commentator born on September 12, 1978, in Austin, Texas. He graduated magna cum laude from the University of Virginia with a double major in Economics and Foreign Affairs. McKenzie is best known for his roles in television series such as The O.C. (2003–2007), where he portrayed Ryan Atwood; Southland (2009–2013), as Officer Ben Sherman; and Gotham (2014–2019), where he played Detective James Gordon and also directed and wrote several episodes. In addition to his acting career, McKenzie has made significant contributions to literature and social commentary. In 2023, he co-authored Easy Money: Cryptocurrency, Casino Capitalism, and the Golden Age of Fraud with journalist Jacob Silverman. The book critically examines the cryptocurrency industry, highlighting its potential risks and likening it to a modern-day Ponzi scheme. McKenzie has been recognized for his outspoken stance against cryptocurrency, with TIME magazine naming him a prominent critic of the industry .
