Bill Pullman

Bill Pullman is a prolific American actor known for his versatile career across film, television, and stage, often embodying characters ranging from affable leading men to complex, troubled figures. Born on December 17, 1953, he initially taught theatre at Montana State University before making his feature film debut in the 1986 comedy Ruthless People. His breakthrough came swiftly as the Han Solo-inspired hero Lone Starr in Mel Brooks' 1987 cult classic Spaceballs. Pullman went on to become a staple of 1990s cinema, starring in beloved romantic comedies where he often played the "nice guy" who loses the girl, such as Walter in Sleepless in Seattle (1993), before finally winning the leading role opposite Sandra Bullock in While You Were Sleeping (1995). His most iconic role is arguably that of President Thomas J. Whitmore, delivering the famous inspirational speech in the blockbuster Independence Day (1996), a role he reprised in the 2016 sequel. Demonstrating his range, he also starred as the tormented Fred Madison in David Lynch's surreal neo-noir Lost Highway (1997). In recent years, he has gained significant recognition on television as the lead detective Harry Ambrose in the acclaimed limited series The Sinner (2017-2021). Throughout his career, Pullman has maintained a strong connection to the theatre, including a run on Broadway in Edward Albee's The Goat, or Who Is Sylvia?.
