Boman Irani
Boman Irani (born December 2, 1959) is a highly esteemed Indian actor, photographer, and director whose career is a celebrated testament to the idea that talent has no age. Born in Mumbai to an Irani Zoroastrian family, he faced significant childhood struggles, including dyslexia and a lisp, and lost his father six months before his birth. He began his professional life far from the spotlight, working as a waiter and room service staff at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel and managing his family’s ancestral bakery in South Mumbai. His artistic journey started with a 15-year career as a professional sports photographer before he transitioned into theatre under the mentorship of Alyque Padamsee. It was only at the age of 44 that he made his major Bollywood breakthrough as the eccentric Dr. Asthana in Munna Bhai M.B.B.S. (2003), a role that instantly established him as a master of character acting. Over the last two decades, Irani has become a pillar of Indian cinema, known for his versatility in blending comedy, drama, and villainy. He is most famous for his collaborations with director Rajkumar Hirani, delivering iconic performances such as the real estate mogul Lucky Singh in Lage Raho Munna Bhai and the authoritarian dean "Virus" in 3 Idiots (2009), the latter of which earned him the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. His filmography spans over 100 films, including blockbusters like Main Hoon Na, Don, PK, and Uunchai. In 2025, he reached a new career milestone by making his directorial debut with the family drama The Mehta Boys. As of 2026, he continues to expand his presence in South Indian cinema, starring in the horror-fantasy film The Raja Saab and joining the cast of Ram Charan’s high-profile rural drama Peddi. Off-screen, he is married to Zenobia Irani and is the father of two sons, Danesh and Kayoze Irani.
