Caitríona Balfe

Caitríona Mary Balfe is an Irish actress, producer, director, and former model, born on October 4, 1979, in Dublin, Ireland, and raised outside the village of Tydavnet in County Monaghan. She initially studied drama at the Dublin Institute of Technology but was scouted by a model agent while collecting for charity at age 18. This discovery launched a decade-long modeling career that took her to Paris, where she worked for major fashion houses like Chanel, Louis Vuitton, and Dolce & Gabbana, walking in over 250 runway shows in a three-year period and becoming one of the top 20 most in-demand models globally. In 2009, Balfe transitioned back to her original ambition of acting, moving to Los Angeles and undergoing extensive acting classes. She secured early roles in films such as Super 8 (2011), Now You See Me (2013), and Escape Plan (2013). Her career-defining role came in 2013 when she was cast as the lead, Claire Beauchamp Randall Fraser, in the Starz historical drama series Outlander (2014–present), for which she has received multiple Saturn Awards, a BAFTA Scotland Award, an Irish Film & Television Award, and four Golden Globe nominations. More recently, she earned critical acclaim and nominations for a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild Award, and a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Ma in the 2021 film Belfast. Balfe is married to music producer Anthony McGill (m. 2019) and they have one child; she also serves as a patron for the organization World Child Cancer.
