Cara Buono is an American actress, screenwriter, and director born on March 1, 1971, in the Bronx, New York City, to a blue-collar family of Italian descent. She began her acting career at the age of 12, making her debut in Harvey Fierstein's play Spookhouse. Buono continued to work extensively in theater, both on and off-Broadway, before transitioning to film. She graduated from Columbia University in three years with a double major in English and political science.Her film career began in the early 1990s with roles in independent films such as Waterland (1992), Next Stop Wonderland (1998), Chutney Popcorn (1999), and Happy Accidents (2000), the last two of which she also co-produced. She has also taken on larger supporting roles in mainstream films like Ang Lee's Hulk (2003) and Let Me In (2010).Buono is well-known for her significant television roles. She played paramedic Grace Foster in the final season of NBC's Third Watch, Kelli Moltisanti in the final season of HBO's The Sopranos (2006-2007), and earned an Emmy nomination for her portrayal of Dr. Faye Miller in the fourth season of AMC's Mad Men (2010). More recently, she gained widespread recognition for her role as Karen Wheeler in the popular Netflix horror-sci-fi series Stranger Things, which she has been a part of since its premiere in 2016. Her diverse television credits also include appearances in Law & Order franchises, Person of Interest, Supergirl, and The Girl From Plainville. Beyond acting, Buono has also directed, produced, and written films, including the short film Baggage. She is married to Peter Thum, founder of Ethos Water, and they have a daughter.
