Cary Elwes
Cary Elwes (born October 26, 1962) is an acclaimed English actor and author whose career spans over four decades of diverse, high-profile roles. In the 2025/2026 thriller Dead Man’s Wire, he reunites with his brother, producer Cassian Elwes, and director Gus Van Sant to play Detective Michael Grable. His portrayal is a grounded, pivotal performance as the only officer on the Indianapolis police force at the time with formal FBI hostage negotiation training. Elwes famously prepared for the role by studying the Grable family archives and listening to audio recordings of the real detective to master his specific 1970s accent and "neutral" professional demeanor during the high-stakes standoff. Originally a student of acting at Sarah Lawrence College and the Actors Studio, Elwes became a global icon as Westley in the cult classic The Princess Bride (1987). He has since navigated nearly every genre, starring in the Civil War drama Glory (1989), the slapstick comedy Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993), the blockbuster disaster film Twister (1996), and the groundbreaking horror hit Saw (2004) as Dr. Lawrence Gordon. Recently, he has enjoyed a career resurgence in major franchises, appearing in Stranger Things, Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, and Zack Snyder’s Rebel Moon saga. He is also a New York Times bestselling author for his memoir As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride.
