Charlotte Emma Aitchison (born August 2, 1992), known professionally as Charli XCX, is a British singer, songwriter, and actress celebrated for her boundary-pushing, genre-defying approach to pop music, often credited as a pioneer of the hyperpop sound. Born in Cambridge, England, to a Scottish father and a Gujarati Indian mother, she began writing and recording her own music at age 14, using her MSN Messenger username "Charli XCX" as her stage name. After gaining initial traction performing at illegal London rave parties, she signed with Asylum Records in 2010. Her career breakthrough came in 2012 by co-writing and featuring on Icona Pop's massive global hit "I Love It," followed by the success of her own solo hit "Boom Clap" (2014) and co-writing/featuring on Iggy Azalea's chart-topping "Fancy" (2014). Charli XCX has consistently evolved her sound across six studio albums, from the dark wave of her debut True Romance (2013) and the pop-punk influenced Sucker (2014) to the experimental, critically acclaimed mixtapes Number 1 Angel and Pop 2 (both 2017). She achieved her first UK and Australian number one album with Crash (2022), and solidified her mainstream and critical success with the 2024 electronic club album Brat, which earned her three Grammy Awards and five BRIT Awards, cementing her status as a forward-thinking pop auteur. In addition to her music, she is expanding her career into film, producing and starring in the upcoming A24 film The Moment and appearing in films like 100 Nights of Hero (2025).
