Christopher Julius Rock (born in Andrews, South Carolina, on February 7, 1965) is a highly influential American comedian, actor, writer, and filmmaker. He began his stand-up comedy career in New York City in the mid-1980s, where he was discovered and mentored by Eddie Murphy, which led to his first film role in Beverly Hills Cop II (1987). His career gained significant momentum when he joined the cast of Saturday Night Live in 1990, where he, along with other rising stars, became known as the "Bad Boys of SNL."After leaving SNL, Rock achieved superstar status with his 1996 HBO comedy special, Bring the Pain, which is widely considered one of the greatest stand-up specials of all time. This success led to his own acclaimed HBO talk show, The Chris Rock Show, and a successful film career. He has starred in numerous films, including Lethal Weapon 4 (1998), Dogma (1999), The Longest Yard (2005), and the animated Madagascar franchise, where he voiced the character Marty the zebra. He also created and narrated the semi-autobiographical sitcom Everybody Hates Chris (2005-2009).In recent years, Rock has continued to diversify his career, starring in the fourth season of the critically acclaimed series Fargo and taking on the lead role of Detective Zeke Banks in the horror film Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021). He has also directed and starred in films such as Head of State (2003), I Think I Love My Wife (2007), and Top Five (2014). A four-time Emmy Award winner and three-time Grammy Award winner, Chris Rock is consistently ranked among the greatest stand-up comedians of all time, known for his incisive, and often provocative, humor on topics of race, politics, and society. His live Netflix special, Selective Outrage (2023), further cemented his status as a prominent and enduring voice in comedy.
