Chris Sanders is a renowned American filmmaker, animator, and voice actor, celebrated for his distinctive storytelling and character design in animated films. Born on March 12, 1962, in Colorado Springs, Colorado, Sanders was raised in an artistic household where his father encouraged his creative pursuits. Initially interested in comic strips and filmmaking, Sanders discovered his passion for animation during high school and pursued a degree in character animation from the California Institute of the Arts, graduating in 1984. He began his professional career at Marvel Productions before joining Walt Disney Feature Animation, where he contributed to iconic films such as Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, and Mulan. In 2002, Sanders co-wrote, co-directed, and voiced the character Stitch in Lilo & Stitch, a film that became a cultural phenomenon. After leaving Disney in 2006, he joined DreamWorks Animation, where he co-directed How to Train Your Dragon (2010) and directed The Croods (2013). In 2024, Sanders returned to DreamWorks to direct The Wild Robot, based on Peter Brown's book series, which received critical acclaim. Throughout his career, Sanders has been recognized with multiple awards and nominations, including two Academy Award nominations, two BAFTA nominations, a Golden Globe nomination, ten Annie Awards, and three Visual Effects Society Awards . Beyond filmmaking, he co-authored the illustrated novel Rescue Sirens: The Search for the Atavist with his wife, Jessica Steele-Sanders, in 2015 .
