Chulachak Chakrabongse

Chulachak Chakrabongse, also widely known by his mononym Hugo, is a Thai-American singer-songwriter and actor born in London on August 6, 1981, to Narisa Chakrabongse and Allen Levy. He is a member of the Thai royal family, a great-great-grandson of King Rama V, and is of English, Russian, Scottish, Thai, and Ukrainian heritage. Raised primarily in Thailand, he began his career as a teenager acting in Thai soap operas and forming the local rock band Siplor (สิบล้อ), which released four studio albums. After moving abroad, he achieved international recognition when his song "Disappear" was featured on Beyoncé's 2008 album I Am... Sasha Fierce, which led to him signing with Jay-Z's Roc Nation label in 2010. His musical style has been dubbed "gangsta-rock," blending country, blues, and rock, and his debut solo album, Old Tyme Religion (2011), included his popular bluegrass cover of Jay-Z's "99 Problems." He has continued to release both English and Thai language albums, such as Deep in the Long Grass (2014) and ดำสนิท (2017). A recurring theme in his public commentary is a principle of being "against anyone in power," as well as finding clarity in his priorities after getting married in 2009 to Tassanawalai Ongartitthichai (known as Hana), with whom he has two children. He has also returned to acting, including starring in the 2016 stage play Dracula and the 2025 crime thriller film Everybody Loves Me When I'm Dead.
