Ciarán Hinds

Ciarán Hinds is a distinguished Irish actor renowned for his commanding presence on both stage and screen. Born on February 9, 1953, in Belfast, Northern Ireland, he was the only son among five children. His mother, Moya, was a schoolteacher and amateur actress, while his father, Gerry, was a doctor. Initially pursuing law at Queen’s University Belfast, Hinds shifted his focus to acting and graduated from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in 1975. He began his professional acting career at the Glasgow Citizens' Theatre in 1976 and later performed with the Royal Shakespeare Company, including a notable role as Richard III in 1993. His stage work also includes performances with the Abbey Theatre and the Druid Theatre Company. Hinds' film career commenced with Excalibur (1981), and he has since appeared in a diverse array of films such as There Will Be Blood (2007), The Woman in Black (2012), Frozen II (2019), and Belfast (2021), the latter earning him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. On television, he portrayed Mance Rayder in Game of Thrones and Julius Caesar in Rome. His voice work includes roles in Frozen II and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts (2023). Beyond his acting career, Hinds has served on the board of directors for YouthAction Northern Ireland and is known for his preference for meaningful roles over Hollywood fame. He resides in France with his wife, French-Vietnamese actress Hélène Patarot, whom he met during the production of The Mahabharata in 1987. They have a daughter, Aoife Hinds, who is also an actress.
