Robert Clark Gregg Jr., known professionally as Clark Gregg, is an American actor, director, and screenwriter born on April 2, 1962, in Boston, Massachusetts. His family moved frequently during his childhood, and he lived in seven different cities by the time he was 17. After attending Ohio Wesleyan University for two years, he moved to Manhattan and worked various jobs before enrolling in New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in drama and English in 1986.Gregg began his career as a founding member and former artistic director of the acclaimed off-Broadway Atlantic Theater Company in New York. He gained significant recognition for his stage work, including appearances in the original Broadway production of "A Few Good Men" by Aaron Sorkin.While he had numerous supporting roles in films like "The Usual Suspects" (1995), "Magnolia" (1999), "State and Main" (2000), "One Hour Photo" (2002), "We Were Soldiers" (2002), "In Good Company" (2004), and "(500) Days of Summer" (2009), Clark Gregg is most widely known for his portrayal of Agent Phil Coulson in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). He first appeared as Coulson in "Iron Man" (2008), a role he reprised in "Iron Man 2" (2010), "Thor" (2011), "The Avengers" (2012), and "Captain Marvel" (2019). Following his character's apparent death in "The Avengers," he became the lead of the popular ABC television series "Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." (2013-2020), further exploring Coulson's journey and even directing several episodes. He also voiced Coulson in animated series like "Ultimate Spider-Man" and various video games.Beyond the MCU, Gregg has had prominent television roles as FBI Special Agent Mike Casper in "The West Wing" (2001-2004) and as Richard, the ex-husband of Christine Campbell, in the sitcom "The New Adventures of Old Christine" (2006-2010). He is also an accomplished screenwriter, having penned the horror film "What Lies Beneath" (2000), and a director, with credits including "Choke" (2008), based on Chuck Palahniuk's novel, and "Trust Me" (2013).
