Cloris Leachman was an American actress and comedian whose career spanned over seven decades, earning her a reputation as one of Hollywood's most versatile and beloved performers. Born on April 30, 1926, in Des Moines, Iowa, she began her acting journey in the 1940s after competing in the Miss America pageant, which led to a scholarship to study under Elia Kazan at the Actors Studio in New York City. Leachman gained national fame for her role as Phyllis Lindstrom on The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1970–1975), a performance that earned her two Primetime Emmy Awards. She later starred in the spin-off series Phyllis (1975–1977), further solidifying her place in television history. Her film career was equally distinguished, with notable performances in The Last Picture Show (1971), for which she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, and Mel Brooks' Young Frankenstein (1974), where she portrayed the memorable character Frau Blücher. Throughout her career, Leachman amassed eight Primetime Emmy Awards—tied for the most acting Emmys ever awarded to a performer—along with a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe Award, and an Academy Award. She continued to act well into her later years, with memorable roles in Malcolm in the Middle (2000–2006) and Raising Hope (2010–2014). In 2011, she was inducted into the Television Academy Hall of Fame, a testament to her enduring impact on the entertainment industry. Leachman passed away on January 27, 2021, at the age of 94 in Encinitas, California. Her death was attributed to a stroke, with COVID-19 being a significant contributing factor.
