Colin Arthur O'Donoghue (born January 26, 1981, in Drogheda, County Louth, Ireland) is an Irish actor and musician who studied at Dundalk Grammar School and trained at Dublin’s prestigious Gaiety School of Acting. He began his career in Irish and UK theatre and television, earning the Irish Film & Television Award for Best New Talent in 2003 for his performance as Norman in Home for Christmas. A multi-talented performer, he co-founded the band The Enemies in 2003, contributing guitar and vocals until he departed in 2012 to fully pursue acting . O'Donoghue rose to international fame in 2012 when he was cast as Captain Killian "Hook" Jones on ABC’s Once Upon a Time, initially as a guest before becoming a series regular—his charismatic and youthful take on the iconic pirate quickly became a fan favorite across six seasons. His film credits include a notable Hollywood debut opposite Anthony Hopkins in The Rite (2011) and the indie drama The Dust Storm (2016), while his voice acting spans projects like Netflix’s Tales of Arcadia (as Douxie Casperan) and Skydance’s Luck (as Gerry). More recently, he portrayed astronaut Gordon Cooper in Disney+’s The Right Stuff (2020) and has appeared in Dolly Parton’s Heartstrings and the animated series The Great North . Married to Helen (a schoolteacher) since 2009, he is father to their two children, Evan and Millie.
