Connie Temweka Gabisile Chiume (born on June 5, 1952, in Welkom, South Africa, and passed away on August 6, 2024, in Johannesburg) was a celebrated South African actress and filmmaker with a career spanning over four decades. Initially training as a teacher and even venturing into touring musicals, Chiume found her passion in acting, starting with stage productions like "Porgy and Bess" and "Ipi Ntombi." Her return to South Africa coincided with the end of apartheid, opening doors for her in local television. She gained prominence in series like "Inkom' Edla Yodwa" and "Zone 14," for which she won a SAFTA Award. Chiume also made significant contributions to South African cinema in films such as "Warriors from Hell" and "Blessers," and achieved international recognition for her role as a Mining Tribe Elder in the Marvel blockbuster "Black Panther" and its sequel, "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," as well as in Beyoncé's "Black Is King." Throughout her illustrious career, Connie Chiume received numerous accolades, including a Lifetime Achievement Award at the South African Film and Television Awards in 2022, solidifying her status as a respected figure in the entertainment industry. In one of her final roles, she appeared in the 2025 film "Meet the Khumalos" as Mavis Khumalo.
