Cooper Hoffman is an American actor born on March 20, 2003, in New York City. He is the son of the late Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman and costume designer Mimi O'Donnell. Despite his father's legacy in Hollywood, Cooper initially hesitated to pursue acting, often participating in school plays only as part of the stage crew. His perspective changed when director Paul Thomas Anderson, a close collaborator of his father's, invited him to audition for a role in the 2021 film Licorice Pizza. Cooper's performance as Gary Valentine marked his professional acting debut and earned him critical acclaim, including a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. Following his debut, Cooper continued to build his filmography with roles in Wildcat (2023), directed by Ethan Hawke, and Saturday Night (2024), where he portrayed Dick Ebersol. In 2025, he starred in the dystopian film The Long Walk, based on Stephen King's novel, playing the lead role of Raymond Garraty. His upcoming projects include I Want Your Sex, a romantic thriller directed by Olivia Wilde, and Poetic License, a comedy directed by Maude Apatow. In addition to his film work, Cooper made his stage debut in 2025 in Sam Shepard's play Curse of the Starving Class, produced by The New Group Off-Broadway. This role marked a significant step in his acting career, showcasing his versatility across different mediums. Cooper's journey into acting has been deeply influenced by his father's legacy. While filming The Long Walk, he reflected on the emotional parallels between his character's experience and his own grief, drawing from his father's untimely passing in 2014. Through his work, Cooper continues to honor his father's memory, carving out his own path in the entertainment industry.
