Daniel Blumberg
Daniel Blumberg (born September 22, 1990) is an Academy Award-winning British composer, musician, and visual artist whose career has evolved from indie rock stardom to becoming one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary film scoring. Originally rising to prominence as the frontman of the bands Cajun Dance Party and Yuck, Blumberg left the traditional rock scene in 2013 to pursue an avant-garde solo path. Working out of London's experimental venue Café Oto, he released a series of critically acclaimed solo albums on Mute Records—including Minus (2018), On&On (2020), and GUT (2023)—which are noted for their raw emotionality and improvisational spirit. As a visual artist, he is equally recognized for his intricate silverpoint drawings, which have been exhibited in major galleries across Europe. Blumberg's transition into film scoring has been defined by his close creative partnerships with directors Mona Fastvold and Brady Corbet. After winning an Ivor Novello Award for his debut score for Fastvold’s The World to Come (2020), he reached a career pinnacle in 2025 by winning both the Academy Award and BAFTA for Best Original Score for Corbet’s 70mm epic The Brutalist. His work on that film was hailed for its "brazen and disorienting" architecture, utilizing abrasive brass, prepared piano, and free-jazz sequences to mirror the psyche of a Holocaust survivor.
