David Thewlis

David Thewlis, born David Wheeler on March 20, 1963, is an English actor, director, screenwriter, and author. He grew up in Blackpool, Lancashire, and after playing in punk bands as a teenager, he pursued acting, graduating from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. His career spans over four decades and is marked by his versatile ability to inhabit a wide range of characters. Thewlis first gained critical acclaim for his performance as the misanthropic philosopher Johnny in the 1993 film Naked, for which he won the Cannes Film Festival Award for Best Actor. He became a household name to a new generation of audiences for his role as Professor Remus Lupin in the Harry Potter film series, beginning with Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004). His other notable film roles include playing the villain Ares in Wonder Woman (2017), the doctor in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas (2008), and a troubled man in I'm Thinking of Ending Things (2020). Beyond his film work, Thewlis has a distinguished career in television. He received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for his portrayal of the menacing antagonist V.M. Varga in the third season of the anthology series Fargo. He has also lent his voice to animated shows, most notably as the Shame Wizard in Netflix's Big Mouth. As a filmmaker, he wrote and directed the 2003 film Cheeky, and he is also a published author, with his novel The Late Hector Kipling published in 2007. Thewlis is known for his ability to seamlessly transition between major commercial projects and more quirky, independent roles, and he is slated to appear in the 2025 film Avatar: Fire and Ash.
