Deanie Ip is a highly acclaimed Hong Kong singer and actress, known for her versatility and her compelling portrayals of grassroots characters in film. Born on December 25, 1947, she began her career as a singer, releasing her debut EP in 1969 before focusing on live performances. She resumed recording in the early 1980s, producing several hit Cantopop songs, but primarily shifted her focus to film acting in the late 1980s.Her acting career is marked by significant critical success and numerous accolades. For her performance in the 2011 film A Simple Life, she achieved international recognition, winning nine Best Actress awards, including the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the 68th Venice International Film Festival, the Golden Horse Award, the Asian Film Award, and the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Actress. She is also a three-time winner of the Hong Kong Film Award for Best Supporting Actress, for her roles in My Name Ain't Suzie (1985), Dances with Dragon (1991), and Our Time Will Come (2018). Ip has a long and varied filmography, often playing maternal, tough, or eccentric supporting roles. She briefly stepped away from acting for a 12-year hiatus before returning to her celebrated performance in A Simple Life.In addition to her artistic career, Ip has been publicly outspoken on political issues, notably participating in Hong Kong's 2014 Umbrella Movement, which led to her music being blacklisted on streaming platforms in Mainland China.
