Denis Leary (born Denis Colin Leary on August 18, 1957, in Worcester, Massachusetts) is an American actor, comedian, writer, producer, and singer, known for his distinctive rapid-fire, often cynical, and energetic comedic style. The son of Irish immigrant parents, Leary attended Emerson College in Boston, where he honed his comedic skills and founded the Emerson Comedy Workshop.Leary rose to prominence in the early 1990s with his edgy stand-up specials, particularly "No Cure for Cancer" (1993) and "Lock 'n Load" (1997), which often featured biting social commentary and a chain-smoking persona. He gained further recognition through appearances on MTV, including the popular comedic song "Asshole."Transitioning into acting, Leary established himself in both film and television. His notable film roles include playing Captain George Stacy in "The Amazing Spider-Man" (2012) and its sequel, Coach Vince Penn in "Draft Day" (2014), and appearing in films like "Demolition Man" (1993), "The Ref" (1994), "Wag the Dog" (1997), "The Thomas Crown Affair" (1999), and "Blow" (2001). He is also widely recognized for his voice work as the saber-toothed tiger Diego in the highly successful "Ice Age" animated film franchise, and as Francis, the grumpy ladybug, in Pixar's "A Bug's Life" (1998).On television, Leary is perhaps best known for co-creating and starring as firefighter Tommy Gavin in the critically acclaimed drama "Rescue Me" (2004-2011), a role that earned him Emmy and Golden Globe nominations. He also created and starred in the FX series "Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll" (2015-2016) and has appeared in series such as "The Job" and "Law & Order: Organized Crime." In addition to his entertainment career, Leary is a philanthropist, having founded the Leary Firefighters Foundation in 2000 to support fire departments in the Worcester, Boston, and New York City areas, especially after the 9/11 attacks. He continues to be an active presence in comedy and acting, known for his unique blend of intensity and humor.
