Djenar Maesa Ayu (born January 14, 1973, in Jakarta, Indonesia) is a prominent Indonesian actress, writer, and director. Born into an artistic family, she is the daughter of renowned film director Sjumandjaja and actress Tuti Kirana. Djenar began writing at a young age and later worked as a television presenter before dedicating herself to professional writing and filmmaking. She is known for her often provocative and honest exploration of feminism and sexuality in her works, leading some to associate her with the "sastra wangi" (fragrant literature) movement, a label she disputes. Her notable short story collections include "Mereka Bilang, Saya Monyet!" (They Say I'm a Monkey!) and "Jangan Main-Main (dengan Kelaminmu)" (Don't Play (with your Sex)). She made her directorial debut with the film adaptation of "Mereka Bilang, Saya Monyet!" in 2008 and has directed other films like "SAIA" (2009) and "hUSh" (2016). As an actress, she has appeared in numerous films, including "Koper" (2006), "Cinta Setaman" (2008), and "Kartini," for which she won Best Supporting Actress. Djenar's work often challenges societal norms and taboos, earning her both acclaim and controversy.
