Dominic Bernard Patrick Luke Monaghan is a British-Irish actor born on December 8, 1976, in West Berlin, West Germany, to British expatriate parents. He spent his early childhood moving between various cities in Germany before his family settled in Stockport, England, when he was around 11 years old. Monaghan developed an early interest in acting, participating in school plays and later joining the Manchester Youth Theatre. He also studied English literature, drama, and geography at Aquinas College.Monaghan's professional acting career began on British television, most notably as Geoffrey Shawcross, the youthful sidekick in the detective series Hetty Wainthropp Investigates (1996-1998). His international breakthrough came when he was cast as Meriadoc "Merry" Brandybuck in Peter Jackson's monumental The Lord of the Rings film trilogy (The Fellowship of the Ring (2001), The Two Towers (2002), and The Return of the King (2003)). This role brought him global recognition and he spent nearly two years filming the trilogy in New Zealand, forming close bonds with his fellow hobbit actors.Following the success of The Lord of the Rings, Monaghan starred as the drug-addicted rock star Charlie Pace in the critically acclaimed and immensely popular ABC television series Lost (2004-2010), a role that further solidified his international fame. His other notable film roles include Chris Bradley in X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009) and Beaumont Kin in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019), reuniting him with Lost co-creator J.J. Abrams.Beyond acting, Monaghan is known for his love of nature and wildlife, which he explored as the host of the documentary series Wild Things with Dominic Monaghan (2012-2016). He is also an avid football (soccer) fan, particularly of Manchester United.
