Donald McNichol Sutherland (July 17, 1935 – June 20, 2024) was a prolific and highly respected Canadian actor with a career spanning over six decades and nearly 200 film and television credits. Born in Saint John, New Brunswick, he studied engineering and drama at the University of Toronto before moving to London to pursue acting.Sutherland gained widespread recognition in the late 1960s and early 1970s with roles in iconic war films like The Dirty Dozen (1967), his breakthrough performance as Hawkeye Pierce in Robert Altman's MASH* (1970), and Kelly's Heroes (1970). He further solidified his reputation as a versatile actor with roles in psychological thrillers like Klute (1971) and Don't Look Now (1973), as well as dramas such as Ordinary People (1980), for which he received critical acclaim. Throughout his career, he seamlessly transitioned between leading and supporting roles, portraying a wide range of characters from villains and anti-heroes to benevolent patriarchs, as seen in films like JFK (1991), Outbreak (1995), The Italian Job (2003), and as the estimable Mr. Bennet in Pride & Prejudice (2005). In his later career, he gained new generations of fans for his portrayal of the tyrannical President Snow in The Hunger Games film series (2012-2015).Beyond his film work, Sutherland also had a distinguished television career, earning a Primetime Emmy Award for Citizen X (1995) and two Golden Globe Awards for Citizen X and Path to War (2002). He was also a prominent political activist, notably speaking out against the Vietnam War. Sutherland was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1978 and elevated to Companion in 2019, and received an Honorary Academy Award in 2017, among numerous other accolades. He was married three times, first to Lois May Hardwick, then to Shirley Douglas (with whom he had twins, actor Kiefer Sutherland and Rachel Sutherland), and finally to Francine Racette, with whom he had three more sons: Roeg, Rossif, and Angus, many of whom also pursued careers in the entertainment industry. Donald Sutherland passed away on June 20, 2024, at the age of 88.
