A two-time Tony Award winner, she earned Best Actress in a Musical honors for her roles as Fosca in Passion (1994) and Anna Leonowens in The King and I (1996–1997). She has also been nominated for her performances in Wonderful Town (2003), LoveMusik (2007), and The People in the Picture (2011). In Disney’s Tangled (2010), Murphy voiced the villainous Mother Gothel, a role that showcased her theatrical prowess.
