Born on January 24, 1974, in Atlanta, Georgia, Edward Parker Helms is a celebrated American actor, comedian, and musician whose career spans legendary television sitcoms and blockbuster film franchises. His early life was marked by resilience, as he underwent a major nine-hour open-heart surgery at age 13 to correct a congenital heart defect. He attended Oberlin College, where he initially studied geology before pivoting to film theory and technology. After graduating in 1996, Helms moved to New York City and immersed himself in the comedy scene, training at the Upright Citizens Brigade and working as a video editor to support himself while landing his first voiceover gigs. Helms’ major breakthrough came in 2002 when he was cast as a correspondent on Comedy Central’s The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, where his "field reports" and satirical news segments established him as a top-tier comedic talent. In 2006, he joined the cast of NBC’s The Office as the insecure but lovable a cappella enthusiast Andy Bernard, a role that grew from a guest spot into a series-leading performance. His cinematic career skyrocketed in 2009 with the release of The Hangover, in which he played the uptight dentist Stu Price; the trilogy went on to gross nearly $1.5 billion worldwide. His extensive filmography includes starring roles in Cedar Rapids, Vacation, and Together Together, as well as providing the voice for the Once-ler in The Lorax and the titular character in Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie. In recent years, Helms has expanded his influence as a producer and creator, co-founding Pacific Electric Picture Co. and co-creating the critically acclaimed Peacock series Rutherford Falls. He returned to the spotlight in 2023 starring in the Netflix hit Family Switch, playing a father who swaps bodies with his teenage son. Beyond acting, Helms is a dedicated bluegrass musician, playing banjo for The Lonesome Trio and co-founding the roots music festival and website The Bluegrass Situation. As of early 2026, he remains an active voice in advocacy through the non-profit RepresentUs and recently published a historical non-fiction book titled SNAFU: The Definitive Guide to History’s Greatest Screwups. He resides in Los Angeles with his wife and two children.
